When you grow up in California, you get a skewed sense of the world. This is intensified if you are from LA, where the world is, LA, SF (eye roll), and Vegas. Everything east of Vegas is the same until you get to New York, and we just ignore the South altogether. When I moved to Colorado for college, friends asked if it was cool to go “back east.” When I moved to Vermont for my last 2 years of law school, people asked “Where is that?” or “Why?”

I moved to Vermont sight unseen, largely to escape LA and I figured it was the geographic and social opposite of everything I had ever known. I told my best friend I was nervous to go somewhere so small, and he said, “How small could it be, 15, 20 thousand?” The town had maybe 800 people if you counted people living up in the hills. I drove into town with my dog, and I could not have imagined that such a place existed. But in 1995 you could not just google on your phone.

I went from having beer and smokes delivered from Pink Dot to not being able to get gas after 9 pm.

A couple of years later, that same friend fled LA and settled in Milwaukee. I’m meeting him in Chicago next week foe one night of fun, then the next night in Milwaukee. I would live some nice restaurant recommendations from locals, and i dont mind if they are pricey.

Yeah because southern Illinois is Sooooo close to milwaukee...did you fail geography or something? Chicago is a beautiful city to spend a day in with a rich history, great museums and excellent food from all over the world something you won’t find south of I80.

As for restaurants recommendations if price isn’t a factor I’d suggest the signature lounge. It’s on the 96th floor of the John Hancock building and offers gourmet food and gorgeous views

Even if you go up to the Lounge for a drink, it’s the same price as the observation deck, and you get booze in hand!

There are too many places to list, but this is a good one, the Berghoff (owners of Chicago liquor license #1) has good beer and great sandwiches in the side bar, Al’s/Portillo’s/Mr. Beef for Italian beef, Kuma’s Korner for great burgers. Oh yeah...we have Nando’s, too!

Oh I know but anyplace is better then Chicago. Ya I do agree is has good museums, but other then that it’s got nothing else of value imo. It’s just a shitty city. STL/SoIL is just as shitty. STL is also similar as well when it comes to the offerings Chi has. STL you can get the same kinds of foods as well.

There’s some times when I want out but then I look at how the city is nestled among the beautiful natural setting. Sort of in a bowl of mountains if you want to look at it that way.

The south doesn’t suck. I like it. It’s pretty. California People don’t get us. I mean, Florida can go but that’s not Real South.

I can’t remember, but you’re from Alabama?

In Milwaukee you could try the Harbor House or Lake Park Bistro. Both are considered good restaurants, by Milwaukee standards at least.

The nice thing is they have nice views of the lake and downtown.

A fun place to try is a place called The Safe House. It is downtown and has a Spy/CIA theme and is full of cool cold war type artifacts and has secret passageways to enter and leave by. You need a code word to get in. If you don’t know it they have options for you.

There isn’t any place better than chicago. I wouldn’t want to live near any other big city in the country. And I can’t wait to share it with my son. I don’t know why so many people think it’s a shit hole. Especially those who don’t live anywhere near it. If you know where not to go and you don’t have to deal with the politics of it it’s an amazing city.

That’s the thing I was on the shit end of the Chi run state in SoIL. Hell even school my Lacrosse team couldn’t even compete in the state tournaments unless we played teams in our division and they all were in chi and they refused to travel at all. It’s great if you don’t live there or in IL i would suppose. In IL CHI is the only place that matters when it comes to politics.

Lots of states are run by a single city. Look at New York or California. That doesn’t make that city a shit hole especially when it has so much to offer for its own citizens and visitors

Hit Barber Motorsports? With my hands? Sounds painful.

Yes, just making bad jokes. I’ve heard Barber is great. And the Mercedes factory looks interesting.

Barbers is fantastic. The factory tour at Mercedes isn’t special, but man the lobby sure is.

Chris_K_F will recommend the Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee - he’s all about their cheese curds. When you walk in the front door, go to the bar (to the right), not the restaurant (the left).

Plenty of breweries and distilleries near there. Stop across the street at MobCraft - it’s run by a few friends of mine.
